Moving Presence | | Body-Mind Centering® Research Program 2024

420947453_881212697345026_418147537328459087_n
Is a research program offers a deep experience of the principles and approaches of Body-Mind Centering®. Through anatomical information, movement, touch, partnerwork and in group settings, structures in the body are made tangible and enable a deep, subtle experience of your body.
Four modules are dedicated to different body systems:
I Module Spring
“Organs: Fullness, Vitality, Relation”
27 April > 1 May |  – Spazio Seme. (Arezzo)
II Module Summer
Weaving grounds: Developmental Movement Patterns
17 > 21 July | Nature Retreat – Artis Umbria. (Fabro)
III Module Autumn
Fluids: Rhythm and Flow
17 > 20 October | – Spazio Seme. (Arezzo)
IV Module into Winter
“The dynamics of Sensing, Perception and the Nervous System”
28 November > 1 Dicember | Nature Retreat – Gaia Terra. (Udine)
You will be provided with profound knowledge, engage in in-depth experience and become aware of the interconnectedness of inner and outer processes: awareness on a subtle, cellular level and its expression through movement. This will create space to expand your movement potential and your ways in which you express and differentiate, in other words: to inhabit your body in a new way. Contact improvisation and Authentic Movement will be layered in as integration. We will offer optional contemplative dance practice as mediation practice in the mornings and optional jamming in the evenings. Each module is dedicated to specific topics; the contents build on each other.
Prerequisites are a desire and willingness to move freely and have an interest in touch as well as self-responsibility in working with one’s own body.
**** applications open from February 10 ****

BIOGRAFIA E LETTERATURA – Laboratorio intensivo di scrittura

BIOGRAFIA E LETTERATURA

International Program of Voice

Friends University Chapman University & Spazio Seme

Program description

The program was born from an idea of Spazio Seme, international art center of Arezzo with the collaboration of Friends University (Kansas) and the partnership of Chapman University (California) and thanks to the collaboration of Oida Orchestra instabile di Arezzo, Fondazione Guido d’Arezzo , CAMU, AB Centre, Arezzo Sport College and Sandy Caffé.

“Opera Seme” a one-month training course, where musicians live a residential and performative experience in Italy, through the study of the language and a “full immersion” in Italian culture, following a coaching program, masterclasses, workshops about  voice, opera, mise en scéne and guided tours.

The teachers are Italian and American professionals: Matthew Schloneger (Friends University), Jen Stephenson (Baylor University), J. Bradley Baker (Tarleton State University), Gianni Bruschi (Spazio Seme) and Eva Mei, refined soprano, professor at the Academy of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, performer of Italian bel canto, with a long opera and chamber career and performances in the main European and world theaters, who held singing masterclasses for the participants and individual coaching for each singer.

The master classes were also held by: Claire Singher (Opernhaus Zurich), Alison Trainer (Furman University), Adriana Zabala (Yale University), Paula Zacharías (Argentina).

Spazio Seme

It is an international center that has been active for 10 years in Arezzo and deals with all-round artistic training: from singing to theater, from storytelling to the arts of expressive movement. He has organized over 500 public entertainment events and 30 artistic residencies, brought shows to 34 countries, from Greece, Mexico to Norway, Ireland, Chile, Tunisia and India. It has been co-organizing and supporting the International Dance Festival for 10 years: “ItalyContactFest” with internationally renowned artists and dancers.

Dance Marathon – 51- hours Dance immersion for the 51st anniversary of Contact Improvisation

51CI – 51HR is an invitation to stay together and dance for an extended time, immersed in the unstable score of the JAM.
Celebrating the 51th anniversary of the birth of Contact Improvisation.
For 51 hours we will co-move in the community crossing together the different landscapes of attention, emotions and sensations. 51 hours to fill and empty the space.
The dance is always there to support us.
Dance is the center and periphery of this encounter.
During these 51 hours we will be guided by a structure – flexible – which contains us and expands at the same time. We will travel together starting from the movement, discovering ways that (dis) organize us in the community.
Improvising our dance is also rethinking our practice over and over again.
We invite all those who feel the desire and curiosity to dance and create this expanded practice space.
This event is designed for people with experience in contact improvisation and JAMS.

Intensive with Paolo Cingolani

Time: phrasing and musicality in improvisation –

The seminar is aimed at dancers, actors and musicians who want to study and practice instantaneous composition through the lens of Time. Time will therefore be the main subject through which to enter the flow of the present moment during improvisation. Within this ‘frame’ topics such as: the different perception between instant and temporal duration, time as a pragmatic tool for creating dance phrases, the distinction between linear time and radial time will be addressed. Great space will also be given to the relationship between dance and music (recorded music and live music). Participants will learn to relate to music in a direct way and without mutual “dependencies”: no longer following or being followed by the music, but learning to dialogue with it “on an equal footing”, establishing a constantly evolving dialogue in the flow of notes and movements . The proposed exercises will focus on listening deeply to one’s body as well as one’s mind, on the emergence of spontaneity, imagination and the creation of poetry of movement. Participants will be accompanied, during the lesson, through a progressive path that will start from the simplicity of the individual act, to the complexity and richness of an instant group emotion.

—————–

Paolo Cingolani is an Italian dancer specialized in the art of improvisation and instantaneous composition. Her work is characterized by a specific practice on intuition as the first tool to create dance and text in performance. Since 2012 he has been a member of Julyen Hamilton’s Allen’s Line company. In recent years, Paolo has also dedicated himself to creating dance performances with other artists, dancers, musicians and visual designers. In this context of freelance, he has performed extensively in many European cities (2005-2023). As a teacher, he has developed a personal technique of movement and theater (Movement Alchemy) resulting from the combination of Tai-Ji Qi Gong with the principles of contemporary dance and instantaneous composition. Since 2006 he has been invited to teach in festivals, schools and institutions throughout Europe.

Contact Improvisation

with Leonardo Lambruschini & Consuelo Pacheco
Contact Improvisation, as a dance based on improvisation, pushes us to accept whatever happens in the present and transform it into an expressive creation.
Pay attention to what happens spontaneously, experiencing fluidity in a dance for two or more people within the improvisation.
The movement derives from a physical relationship that inspires an instant creation, that is, an improvisation.
Participants are invited to explore and move without resorting to sight, move following hearing, move and express themselves following internal and external impulses.
A child’s first relationship with the world begins with a hug.
An authentic and pure dance that welcomes our thoughts, the limits of the body and fears.
We will work following the fundamental principles of the I.C. on the relationship between weight to gravity, inertia and constant dynamics of a living body always in motion.

Leonardo Lambruschini – Italy
Contact, trust, movement are the central focus around which I develop teaching and practice, both for adults and children. Above all, trust in the present moment as a fruitful source of inspiration and meaning. I am attracted to places and contexts where various forms of art meet, communicate and create something new, that transcends languages and differences. I am also the co-founder and Art Director of Spazio Seme www.spazioseme.com – International Cultural Arts Center in Arezzo (Tuscany, IT). There, we create opportunities to research, organize, and manage festivals, intensive workshops, performances, artistic productions, and residencies. I develop and lead classes for children (ContaKids, PlayContact).
I teach C.I for adults and students, in Italy and abroad. I feel very attracted by the nature and expansive dimension of travel. I have taught at festivals and done intensive labs in India, France, Portugal, Greece, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Russia, Moldova, Georgia, Northern Ireland, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Brazil.
I am one of the organizers of ItalyContactFest – www.italycontactfest.com

Consuelo Pacheco – Chile-Italy
Dancer, Teacher and somatic researcher. Since my childhood, the Dance experience has accompanied my work as a human being.
I started practicing C.I 12 years ago, and during this time my curiosity about the phenomena of the movement continues to expand and invites me to continue to explore unknown places. I am interested in exploring the dimensions of improvisation and the virtues of creativity that can be applied to plasticity and creativity to dance. In my curiosity about the phenomenon of being alive, in recent years I have ventured into the universe of contemplative arts and somatic practices, studying the Alexander Technique in greater depth. In addition, in my daily life I spend a large part of my time lovingly and respectfully raising my daughter Amanda, researching the Montessori and Pikler methods to delve into psychomotor evolutionary development in early childhood. Currently, I am studying the Ecology of Childhood Training at the European Institute of Perinatal Mental Health.

Munz Floor

with Andrea Vazquez-Aguirre
This innovative somatic method was created by Alexander Munz, founder of MAISON MUNZ. In this class, you will experience the benefits of spiraled sequences in the floor that promote elasticity and vital resilience within your fascial system. The class is guided verbally, and the student is empowered to work with their own capabilities.

For more information about this methodology check this website: www.maisonmunz.com

The Unders326383416_1114695462533579_4714250425835555682_ncore is a framework for practicing and researching dance improvisation that Nancy Stark Smith has been developing since 1990 based on her work with Contact Improvisation. It is an open score that guides dancers through a series of “changing states”, from solo deepening/releasing and sensitizing to gravity and support; through group circulation and interaction, contact improvisation engagements, opening out to full space improvisation with compositional awareness.
The Global Underscore is practiced globally and simultaneously every year for the Summer Solstice. It was proposed, for the first time, by Clair Filmon in 2000, following her desire to connect dancers from all over the world to create and compose all together in the present moment.

Las Titis

We are Iris Fiorelli and Mi Chan Tchung, body artists with more than 20 years of experience. In 2020 we created the company Las Titis. Our language is based on Contact Improvisation dance, clowning, therapeutic somatic arts and travel, practices that reflect our way of relating to the world. We develop scenic and pedagogical creations for children, youth, adults and seniors, always investigating the intersections between art, health, love and humor.

Iris Fiorelli (Brazil)

Graduated in Hatha Yoga and Inclusive Dance for Children, she has been dedicated since 1997 to clowning and dance, especially to Contact Improvisation.

Since 2005, I have been focused on the practice, dissemination and creation of works that unite these languages, in search of a comic dancing body. I like to see life through the clown optics: open gaze, curiosity, innocence, ridiculous, mistake, self-exposition, availability to the game. I’m interested in demystifying taboos, talking with delicacy and humor about feelings, sex and death. I look for the lightness and the fluidity in the movements, in how to move and make movements in nature, being earth and water.

I live in nature, invest in somatic practices and water dance. Since 2009 I have co-organized the seaside CI festival “Transformando pela Prática”, in the south of Brazil (www.transformandopelapratica.wordpress.com). Since 2014 I’m based in Ilhabela, a paradise island in Southeast Brazil. I have two solo shows as Carmela the Clown: “Magavilha” and “Retalhos Populares”.

Mi Chan Tchung (Brazil)

Having earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication of the Body Arts as well as a Pedagogy Degree, Mi is now pursuing a Postgraduate Degree in Play Therapy and Training in Art Therapy. As a solo performer, I created the street acts ‘Menu’ and ‘Mrs. Cloud’. Practitioner and promoter of Contact Improvisation dance since 2005, I was especially influenced by the CI community from Argentina, where I have spent the majority of the last 12 years. Being a traveler, I hold contact and improvisation as a life style. Working as an artistic producer, I apply many tools from CI to my creative processes. link I’ve studied with many South American and international teachers, and I find in the dance with beginners a big source of my development within the CI form. I am currently researching and developing a philosophy/method called “Dance Ludens”, catalyzed by the process of teaching and learning through the play movement.

Caterina Mocciola (Brazil)
Dancer, performer, teacher, and linguist, she meets Contact Improvisation in Australia where she starts studying and practicing this dance form that – as for many others – has changed her life. The continuous research and wish to delve deeper into it, in 2009 led her to undertake a sabbatical dedicated to the study of CI. Earthdance was naturally chosen as the starting point where she took part in Nancy Stark Smith’s three weeks intensives. Since then, the meetings with the so-called “CI God-Mother” happened on different occasions: in the summer of 2009 at the pre-festival workshop in Budapest where she was the interpreter for the Italian group; in 2011 she was invited by Nancy for a research period of two weeks on her lifework at the Roehampton University in London for the Extend Underscore Research
Group; in 2016 she met Nancy again in Berlin for the last Global Underscore facilitated by Nancy in Europe, where she documented the introduction of the last glyph introduced to the Underscore; in 2017 she was invited to participate as Project Manager for the Global Calendar. Since 2009 she has been facilitating the Underscore and the Global Underscore both in Italy and internationally.
Meeting Nancy has been crucial, of great inspiration, in unexpected and profound ways. Among these, definitely the initial spark for this collective to come together as a group that now is invested in this research.
Consuelo Pacheco –  Italia/ Chile
Educator, Dancer and Somatic Researcher.
Since I was a child, Dance has accompanied my actions as a human being. I studied professionally to become a germinator of free movement spaces. 12 years ago I met the C.I, and during this “practice time” my curiosity for the awareness of the movement emerges more pleasant and moving in the dance. In recent years I have ventured into the universe of contemplative arts and somatic practices, studying the Alexander Technique in more depth.
Since 2012 I have taught dance and improvisation classes to children, young people and adults, dancers and amateurs in Latin America and Europe. Currently, I live in Italy and collaborate in the Dance area of Spazio Seme – International Cultural Arts Center in Arezzo.
In my daily life, I spend a large part of my time lovingly and respectfully raising my daughter Amanda, researching the Montessori and Pikler methods to delve into psychomotor evolutionary development in early childhood.

MOTO PERPETUO

with Lior Ophir (Israel/Italy)

PERPETUUM MOBILE
EFFORTLESS DANCING BETWEEN DREAM AND REALITY
Perpetuum mobile (perpetual motion) is the motion of a body that continues forever in an unperturbed system. A perpetuum mobile apparatus is a system that can work infinitely without an external energy source. This kind of systemwas proven to be impossible, but the search for this apparatus dates back to the middle ages and continuing into modern times.
In this workshop I am interested to take the search of this PERPETUUM MOBILE into ourselves – explore the art of effortless and infinite dancing together.

We will explore ways to lubricate the joints and move with ease and minimal effort.
Ways to relax the mind, so listening, meeting and choosing – moment by moment – become organic, spontaneous and pleasurable.
Through knowing and respecting the forces around and within us – difficult becomes easy and impossible becomes possible
Through continuous movement, relaxed and awake, we will find ways to recycle and transform energy – dancing in solo and with a partner.

We will practice using just as much as we really need.
Be clear and generous – Give energy to the space and to my partners, when I can.
Be open and willing – Receive energy from others, when I want.
Transform and recycle my own energy.
Move low a
nd high, slow and fast, alone and together.
Discover and re-discover the simple but deep pleasure of dancing.
The art of dancing effortlessly.
The alchemy of our own PERPETUUM MOBILE.

Each day will start with soft close-to-the-floor fine-tuning of the body/mind.
We will then take the quality we create and the knowledge we will gain, as well as using some detailed exercises, into contact improvisation – dancing and jamming.

Michele Marchesani (danzatore/musicista)

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————

The laboratory was born from the will and desire of Giorgio Rossi, choreographer and dancer, together with the musician Michele Marchesani to approach the infinite world of improvisation to give the possibility of broadening creative horizons, seeking a more complete context where dance, music, gesture, word and game can remain free and harmoniously united to the emotions, feelings and experiences of each one, the real ones as well as the imagined ones. The expression of the body, the creative movement are the rediscovery of movement and its energy, even more primordial; in relation not so much and only to the development of physical skills but:

as the possibility of expanding one’s own listening experiences, of rediscovering and serene acceptance of a forgotten and yet real body
as a poetic experience in improvisation in which the rediscovered body can act as an expression of one’s emotions and inner energies, helping the growth of a “language of emotions” (in spite of oneself)
as an experience that allows you to increase the narration of the body in order to try to get closer to self-knowledge and to a new way of communicating with others
Dance produces sound and energy and this must be developed and placed in the narrative of the moment.
You are not only moving but discovering knowledge at the same time.

“Every instant is a pretext for amazement and imagination. Dance is practicing the sensual observation of what is around me, life. Senses, memories, the change of colors, sounds, smells, flavors in time and space feed my danced gestures A game of perceptions and elaborations on the present that awakens ideas to enrich our being and nourish life more intensely”.
George Rossi

bio Giorgio Rossi

He was the co-founder in 1984 of the Compagnia Sosta Palmizi and of the subsequent Association of which he is still co-artistic director together with Raffaella Giordano.

Giorgio Rossi, as E. Satie would say‚ “is a dancing mammal”. At the age of 4, seeing the Swiss clown Dimitri, he understood that the theater was his life. He owes his artistic fortune to having been able to attend the works of great masters (Kantor, Brook, Bausch, Carlson) and, with some ‚he learned the scenic art‚ both as a pupil and as an interpreter. He collaborates with artists from other fields, such as: P. Fresu, B. Bertolucci, T. Gylliam, S. Benni, P. Turci, L. Poli, D. Riondino, P. Rossi, Banda Osiris, G. Mirabassi, M. Rabbia, M. Baliani and many others; he participates as an author dancer in the transmission Come away with me by R. Saviano and F. Fazio. In 2013 he curated all the movements of Bizet’s Carmen with the Piazza Vittorio Orchestra. With his shows, over 30 productions, he has traveled the world thanks to the universality of the poetic art of movement.
In recent years he has created three shows aimed at a new generation of audiences (Con il naso all’insu, Costellazioni. Ready, set… space !, Fantastic exercises). In 2019 he is curator of the training and creative residency at the École des Sables in Dakar for the exchange project “Italie, Culture, Afrique”. He has collaborated with the El Grito company both as an interpreter (Gran Circo Rossini) and as a choreographer (Magnet Man). In 2021 and 2022 he is engaged as author and interpreter together with R. Goretti and M. Bonechi for Andrea Pazienza’s production The Last Days of Pompeo.

Giorgio Rossi has been carrying out for many years, in Italy and abroad, a sensitive activity linked to training in which workshops and collaborations with dance, theater and circus schools contribute to the diffusion of dance art.

Bio Michele Marchesani

He is a Shiatsu teacher, a Contact Improvisation dancer, a musician and a researcher of the dynamics of perception and movement. From studying the piano and guitar he passes after a few years to songwriting composition, recording two albums, and performing in numerous musical formations. Fundamental for him the encounter with the theater and dance for which he recorded several tracks until he became passionate almost exclusively to the improvisational process, which is today his main interest. Integrates, practices and writes about the relationship between sound and body in motion, improvises with dancers and actors, intersects sound with natural environments, creates and designs literary/musical performances and develops his own particular style of using electronics as an expressive tool.

50CI – 50HR is an invitation to stay together and dance for an extended time, immersed in the unstable score of the JAM. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the birth of Contact Improvisation.
For 50 hours we will co-move in the community crossing together the different landscapes of attention, emotions and sensations. The dance is always there to support us.
Dance is the center and periphery of this encounter.
During these 50 hours we will be guided by a structure – flexible – which contains us and expands at the same time. We will travel together starting from the movement, discovering ways that (dis) organize us in the community.
Improvising our dance is also rethinking our practice over and over again.
We invite all those who feel the desire and curiosity to dance and create this expanded practice space. CI practitioners with little or much experience are welcome, in a space where knowledge can mix and cause new bifurcations in the way of experiencing and investigating CI.

Some of the practices that will be present in the 50 hours:
Contemplative dance
Somatic practices
Tea ceremony
Space for reading and imagination
Video Performance / Studio
Time of Silence

Movement & Voice
Techniques of Instant Composition

with Paolo Cingolani

Instant Composition is a method to create movements, sounds and words in an intuitive and spontaneous way. During the workshop we will work from the physicality of the body to the meaning of the words. Sounds, pre verbal text, logics of grammar, cohabitation of movements and voice will be some of the areas of study touched during the week.

The method proposed aims first of all on increasing trust in one’s own intuition and spontaneity, and then on the creative aspect of action. Through the participation of the body and the observation of the mind, the students will learn to create dances and poetry in the flow of the present moment.

Participants will be guided in the workshop through a progressive approach that starts from the simplicity of the individual act, to reach the complexity and richness of an instantaneous group composition.

Paolo Cingolani is an Italian dancer specialized in the art of improvisation and instant composition. His work is characterized by a specific training on intuition as the first tool to create dance and text in performance. Since 2012 he is a member of Allen’s Line company of Julyen Hamilton. Paolo has also dedicated to create performances with other artists, dancers, musicians and visual designers. His way to compose choreographies and characters on stage defines a clear poetic of time and space in the contemporary scenic arts. In this freelance context, he has performed extensively through Europe (2005-2020). As a teacher, he has developed his personal body’s technique resulting from the combination of Tai-Ji and Qi Gong with the principles of contemporary dance. Since 2006 he has been teaching in schools, universities and festivals all around Europe. www.paolocingolani.com

Underscore and Global

https://globalunderscore.com
The Underscore is a framework for practicing and researching dance improvisation that Nancy Stark Smith has been developing since 1990 based on her work with Contact Improvisation.

She forms the creation and research group Sus Derivas -together with Carmen Pereiro Numer, Lucía F. Moujan and Soledad Gutierrez- which obtained the FNA 2021 training grant for somatic studies of Rabine and Feldendrais method with Mariano Pattin, focused on research on movement, voice and performance.
Paula’s work will focus on the opening towards the visual and sensory field of perception towards improvisation from the approach to the practice of Tuning Scores (created by choreographer Lisa Nelson): A system of communication and editing of movement in real time that allow to establish a relationship of observation and composition between the action and the attention of movement -including in this relationship the sensory fields that are involved as parts of the sense of organization between image, sound, perception, attention and imagination. The scores offer tools and practices of internal and external communication that highlight the ways in which each of us feels, sees and makes sense of movement.
CATERINA MOCCIOLA
CONSUELO PACHECO / Chile
Currently, I am studying the Ecology of Childhood Training at the European Institute of Perinatal Mental Health.
