The spirit of Roy Hart Theatre – Workshop

The laboratory is one of the fringe activities of the Opera Seme Festival IV Ed. – Opera PoP section
Participants of this workshop will work with founding member of the Roy Hart Theatre, Ian Magilton, and the cast of Acis and Galatea to discover, develop, and expand their presence through voice and movement.
The workshop aims to approach classical singing through the lens of the Roy Hart theatre, seeking the emotional foundations of this music in order to discover its accessible and pleasurable heart. To do so we will offer many contrasting approaches representing our wildly diverse ensemble. For the past couple of years, we have been working on a subtle and difficult task—building a link between the extended voice work of Roy Hart theatre and Haendel’s lyric opera Acis and Galatea. They appear to be two totally different worlds with nearly nothing in common, and yet both are united by a common theme: To express the core of the human condition through music.
Music, especially when it comes from the voice, contains all the dynamic tensions of the human condition—the need for order and improvisation, heart and reason. In order there is beauty and repetition, but not invention. To find something new we first have to get lost and then there is the great and noble task to bring invention back out of the chaos to create beauty.
We have designed this workshop to guide participants through a glimpse into our experience as an ensemble—a journey of audacious invention that arrives at wonder and beauty. If that excites you, we hope you will join us.
The main themes of this workshop include:
- presence in the voice and on stage
- technique for classical singing
- dance and movement from Indian Kathakali traditions, movement improvisation and practical physical training for stage presence.

Workshop fees: 200 euros (Optional: 30 euros for daily individual sessions)
Total class effective time: 16h + performance (during 3 days).
The workshop takes place at Spazio Seme in Arezzo – Tuscany (IT). You can stay in Spazio Seme even for the night, with sleeping bags. And you can arrive the day before.
